The Bangherband

This blog entry is dedicated to all the lesbian and bisexual girls out there who still haven’t gotten attuned to their ‘gaydars’ yet!

This article is a long time coming. One could even say it had become necessary for one to write this. After all, identifying another lesbian or bisexual woman in the crowd is all what sometimes one desperately needs to get their lives stories unfold. It is crucial to know that one’s not alone. Hence, lesbian spotting and an unspoken understood exchange, paramount for survival.

The idea struck me one day while I was talking to my best ‘gay’ friend. I suffer from a very less-known condition called The Will&Grace Syndrome. A whole generation of the show’s viewers who could cope with its end only by getting a ‘gay best friend’! This ‘gay best friend’ is the one who gossips with you, the one who bullies you into mani-pedis, the one who understands boys inside out. This friend of mine – lets call him AD – was carrying out the usual routine by telling me about his earlier, trying-to-figure-himself days; about coming across a complete stranger, at the most unexpected places and stealing a kiss without the exchange of a word. He revealed to me the many, finely crafted, silhouetted sentences and markers gay men have devised over the years in an effort to lead a normal life, all the while having to put up a facade of an abnormal one.

So a lot of gay men have their right ear pierced to indicate that they’re gay. It’s a code for another gay man in the crowd to spot him and maybe create a love story together. This is not to say that all men who have their right earlobe pierced are gay. They might just not be aware of the rule. Or may be they’re confident enough in their gender and sexuality to not feel threatened just by a stupid ear piercing.

So GIRLS, my idea is this – it is what one could say walking around with your sexuality on your sleeve! Popularly known as FCUK bands, these black bangles/bands can be worn to let that cute girl in your college/office know that if she is interested, you would love to take her out for a coffee sometime.
I’m not trying to suggest an ablsolutely binding tenet; its entirely a personal choice. But imagine if the trend does pick up…you wouldn’t be sitting there wondering ‘what if only that girl I had a crush on in high school were wearing this band?’ maybe, you’d have made out with her in the music room where nobody ever came. *smile

So without further ado, I present to you the steps to make ‘THE BANGHERBAND’. The ‘h’ is silent.

Do write to me with your stories if this works.
